Smart Sensing

Smart Sensing

Smart sensing uses data captured from sensors and other sources to create value in a variety of application areas. We work with understanding user behaviour and applications in health care and welfare, intelligent transport systems, electrical grids, and smart cities. Our expertise includes algorithms for machine learning, workflow management, user surveys and observations, ontologies, classification of data, and decision support.

Expertise

  • User Experience (UX): We have developed methods to assess user experience and engagement in a variety of applications, ranging from culture experiences, health and welfare to user interfaces.
  • Workflow management: A workflow is an automation of processes consisting of sets of tasks that, when completed, achieve goals. Real-time data from sensors can be used in a workflow process to support decision making.
  • Decision support: Interpret sensor data in the application domain using advanced tailored models, supported by advanced pattern matching algorithms, machine learning, and workflow management.
  • Robot applications: (social) robots can be seen as mobile systems, that include a variety of sensors and actuators, and that are used in a variety of application areas.

Key applications

  • We develop solutions for healthcare at home and in rural areas. This requires sensor-based solutions and communication systems that allow healthcare providers to offer efficient services. The Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, and mobile healthcare applications are ingredients to optimise this sector.
  • We experiment with new ways to use social robots in health and welfare applications.
  • We do research in understanding user behaviour in venues of various kinds, such as museums, exhibitions, public spaces, and smart cities. A suitable blend of sensor-based observations, short questionnaires, and observations can be used to observe and interpret user behaviour.
