MOSKUS – MObile musculoSKeletal User Self-management

The MOSKUS project is about to develop a smart ICT solution to support self-management for patients suffering from arthritis, a prevalent and debilitating chronic disease. Self-management education using ICT tools can empower patients to become effective health-care participants; thus, saving costs in the health care sector and improving the clinical outcome.

The toolkit developed so far in the MOSKUS project includes tools for self-reporting of the patient's condition using a reporting-app for clinical measurements such as ASDAS, BASDAI, and BASFI. The project has also developed a sensor-based methodology for selected clinical measurements of the BASMI index that have the potential to be used by the patient. These measurements are currently under clinical testing. First results show that the new tests can be applied both for self-management and in a clinical setting. The new method is promising: it will give higher accuracy and less time consumption in relation to the currently used tests.

The toolkit includes a recommendation system where knowledge-driven decision support and evidential reasoning algorithms are used. The recommendations will be given on the basis of the self-reported measurements following the treat-to-target principle used in rheumatology. An app containing elements of a personal health diary has been developed to visualise the patient's disease development as well as recommendations. Real patients suffering from arthritis will test the apps for usability.

The MOSKUS project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the National Competence Center for Rehabilitation (NKRR) at the Diakonhjemmet Hospital, the Sørlandet Hospital, the Norwegian Rheumatism Association (NRF), Norsk Regnesentral (NR), Apertus AS, Tellu AS, and researchers from the De Montfort University, Leicester.
