MOVIS – Performance Monitoring System for Video Streaming Networks

MOVIS – Performance Monitoring System for Video Streaming Networks

When watching streamed video over the Internet consumers are annoyed by disturbances in service quality. In the delivery chain live video content is streamed by a content provider through the network of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to the consumer's home network, and then shown on a PC. Should a consumer experience reduced quality a variety of reasons can apply along the entire delivery chain. Monitoring service quality can help to identify the reasons for reduced quality. In an assessment process a test panel have evaluated video content streamed under various conditions. The MOVIS project identified what to measure, including thresholds and weight factors in order to estimate the experienced quality for the consumer. The results have been implemented in a prototype for measuring and estimating video quality.

NR’s contribution

NR was leading this project. NR developed the mathematical model used for implementing the monitoring sedvice.

Benefit for customers

The customers can document the quality of service that the viewer gets, and be proactive in solving the problem. Also, the log shows what actual quality of service the viewer has.

Benefit for society

As more and more people watch TV- Programs on PCs, the Quality of Service becomes more and more important. With this tool, the service providers can deliver the quality the user has requested.

Project results

The solution has been implemented in Nimsoft's product line.
