Welcome to Statistics for Innovation (sfi)²
From SFI
(sfi)²-Statistics for Innovation is one of the 14 Norwegian Centres for Research-based Innovation. (sfi)² develops core statistical methodologies, strategically necessary to achieve innovation goals in four key sectors: petroleum, finance, marine and health.

News
- Associate Professor in Biomedical Informatics available at Department of Informatics, University of Oslo. Application deadline: June 13, 2012
- Frigessi was interviewed by BBC radio, and a ten minutes conversation between the journalist Chris Smith and him was broadcasted last Sunday. This was part of the popular weekly programme The Naked Scientist. Smith was in Oslo two weeks ago, and made several interviews at UiO. A pod-cast can be heard here (Frigessi starts at 42.40 min). In the interview, Frigessi explains how statistics is changing in the last decade under the data revolution and because of the need to answer more and more complex questions, "second order effects". Frigessi draws a line between statistical research in genomics, clinical studies and finance, to explain how we are moving from the classical setting of testing given hypothesis to a high dimensional hypothesis generating exercise. This gives to statisticians a new exciting role in science.
- New international web-based mentor programme for Ph.D students in statistics and probability at universities in developing countries is launched, sponsored by the International Statistical Institute and the Bernoulli Society. Ph.D students enrol the programme by internet and are put in contact with volunteer senior statisticians. The programme is based at (sfi)² in Oslo, see http://statmentoring.nr.no to find out more on what the programme does. If you wish to join as mentor, please enrol here: http://statmentoring.nr.no/statmentoring/index.php/Mentor_form. Students can join here: http://statmentoring.nr.no/statmentoring/index.php/Student_forms.
Networks and Projects
- Statistical Approaches to Regional Climate Models for Adaptation: A Nordic Top-level Research Initiative (Funded by the Nordic Top-level Research Initiative)
- Insuring Future Climate Change (IFCC) (Funded by The Research Council of Norway)
- Climate Change and the Insurance Industry (ex-CCII)
- New webpage dedicated to Pair-copula constructions.

(sfi)² is a partner in The International Year of Statistics (Statistics2013).
Statistics for Innovation is one of the 14 Norwegian Centres for Research-based Innovation. Host institution of (sfi)² is the Norwegian Computing Center. Statistics for Innovation will develop core statistical methodologies, strategically necessary to achieve innovation goals in four key sectors: petroleum, finance, marine and health. The centre started in 2007 and will operate for eight years. It is based at the Norwegian Computing Center (Norsk Regnesentral, NR) in Oslo and is a partnership with the University of Oslo (UiO), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and 11 partners: Statoil, DNB, Gjensidige, Norsk Hydro ASA, Institute of Marine Research, Sencel, Biomolex, PubGene, Oslo University Hospital, Smerud Medical Research and Spermatech. Statistics for Innovation is funded by the Research Council of Norway and by the partners, with an annual budget of about 4 mill Euro. About 40 researchers will actively join the research projects of the centre. Statistics for Innovation participates to the UiO and NTNU training programmes and will fund many Ph.D grants and postdocs.
Host institution of (sfi)² is the Norwegian Computing Center.
