December 2007

  • Oil price and exchange rates

This project was concluded in 2007. A (non-US) oil producer, with operating revenues in US dollar, may provide a natural hedge by a US dollar-denominated debt if this relationship holds. If oil prices increase, so does the exchange rate and the US dollar debt, and vice versa. However, if the relationship becomes negative, an oil price increase may induce a lower US dollar debt (which is good) or, vice versa, an oil price decrease may induce a higher US dollar debt (double trouble). See: Tvete, Ingunn & Løland, Anders (2007): Oil prices and exchange rates: A survey, NR-Note, SAMBA/47/07

  • Bayesian data analysis with applications to medicine.
At NR, Tuesday June 5, 2007, 09:00-15:00. Bayesian methods are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to frequentist approaches in medicine as well as other fields of research. The aim of this course is to introduce the concepts behind Bayesian data analysis. We also consider Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms and how to do Bayesian inference. The WinBUGS software is a system for doing Bayesian analysis using MCMC methods. A series of examples will be demonstrated in WinBUGS. Instructors: Ingunn Fride Tvete, Marit Holden. More information and registration. For (sfi)² partners favourable registration rules apply.
